Tim & Laura | Sandy Hook, NJ
Here at FPS, we tend to be driven by creativity. Most of Amy and my conversations about photography (or life in general) start with “OH! You know what I wanna try!?” and then spiral into an intricate web of things we have been dreaming up. A while ago, Amy became very interested in acquiring an ampersand to utilize in photos. Like, obsessively interested. If you don’t know what an ampersand is, it’s this symbol: “&.” She kept saying “I’m still looking for an ampersand, I want to find an ampersand, have you seen an ampersand?” until she finally came across one. So yesterday, when she asked me to bring her new, metal ampersand to Laura and Tim’s engagement shoot, I smuggled it through the rain and we packed it along for our ride to Sandy Hook, NJ.
When we got to the beach and began shooting, I had to laugh. Tim and Laura make a great couple… they clearly play off of one another’s sense of humor which makes for the best pictures… and the best life together, frankly. But what made me laugh was that poor Tim did not want too many pictures taken. This isn’t uncommon for a guy, but Tim candidly communicated that this was, indeed, a favor to Laura so that they could have some pro shots to display at their wedding.
As the shoot went on, Tim of course warmed up as all reluctant fiances do. And as we began to integrate Amy’s beloved ampersand into some of the photos, I realized that the concept for that little symbol had a deeper meaning. Tim’s compromise with Laura was all about that ampersand… it’s the “and” that joins two entities together, insisting that they work as one. Once two people make the choice to put an “and” between them, they commit that they cannot do, decide, or experience any of life’s big things without the other person. And that’s a pretty big deal. So here’s to Laura & Tim!
